Sync Google Calender with Windows Mobile for free

I was looking for a way to sync my Google Calendar with my Pocket Informant calendar on my Treo and came upon a few free programs that offer over-the-air, 2 way syncing. I’m sure there are other programs available, but I’m lazy so I didn’t look very long at all.

The first one I tried was a program called OggSync. After syncing the first time, I noticed that my existing recurring events on my phone didn’t show up on the Google calendar. Also, if you already have matching events in both your mobile and Google calendars then you will get duplicate entries. So, it’s best to clean up both calendars before syncing. Obviously, I tried the freeware version which doesn’t support syncing multiple Google Calendars, but it does sync past events up to 2 weeks old, and future events up t0 365 days in advance. There is a Pro version for $30 (too much) that offers multiple calendars and other features.

The second program I tried is one called GooSync. After syncing with this the first time, all the events on my phone that didn’t get picked up by OggSync were successfully picked up and added to my Google calendar. Also, I couldn’t find any duplicated entries. Excellent. The free version will sync future events up to 30 days in advance which is cool with me, but you can still only sync one Google Calendar. They have a Premium version offered at around $30. The Premium version offers an AutoSync which would be nice, and it syncs contacts, but I think $30 is still too much.

One other program I found is an open source tool offered on CodePlex called GMobileSync. I haven’t tested it, but it’s currently in version 1.3.6 so it might still be pretty raw. I’m definitely going to keep my eye out for updates in hopes it will offer features only found in the paid versions of OggSync and GooSync.

For now I’m going to stick with the free version of GooSync.

Smart man… let others do the talking

Clarence Thomas, the Quiet Supreme Court Justice

Arguing before the Supreme Court usually means answering pointed questions from the justices, but nervous lawyers would never have to worry about questions from Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

It has been two years and 142 cases since he last asked a question:

The questions may be helpful to the others, Thomas said, but not to him.

“One thing I’ve demonstrated often in 16 years is you can do this job without asking a single question,” he told an adoring crowd at the Federalist Society, a conservative legal group.

The book tour showed that the topic comes up even among friendly audiences. Indeed, Thomas’ comment was provoked by this question: Why do your colleagues ask so many questions?

His response: “I did not plant that question. That’s a fine question. When you figure out the answer, you let me know,” he said.

Another nail in the HD DVD coffin

I guess headlines like these are no longer surprising. I can’t wait until I can get surplus HD DVDs for a buck.

Paramount & Dreamworks HD DVD support ends March 4

We don’t know if Jeffrey Katzenberg got a text message, fax, e-mail or smoke signal indicating the format war was over, but Video Business has confirmed Paramount and Dreamworks Animation will (rather abruptly) to stop releasing HD DVDs after next week. If you were looking forward to Bee Movie on March 11, Sweeney Todd on April 1 or the just announced There Will Be Blood, those are cancelled. Into the Wild and the appropriately-named Things We Lost in the Fire will be Paramount’s last reminders of its exclusive agreement. Not specifically mentioned was Star Trek: TOS Season 2, but don’t hold your breath. Blu-ray release plans are still up in the air but we wouldn’t be surprised to hear something soon. As far as HD DVD movies still scheduled, that leaves two from Universal (for now) and twelve from Warner Bros, who may have been the first to leave red, but will apparently be the last major studio out the door.

Steak A La Pube

It’s every diner’s nightmare: You’ve somehow offended a restaurant employee who then decides to exact a little revenge by placing something unpleasant in your grub. That’s what cops say happened Saturday night at the Texas Roadhouse in West Bend, Wisconsin.
